เป็นนกเค้าแมวขนาดกลาง มีความสูงประมาณ 49-50 เซนติเมตร ปีกสั้นกว่า 40 เซนติเมตร ดวงตาสีเหลืองจนถึงเหลืองแกมทอง มีขนเหนือคิ้วเป็นแผงยาวออกไปด้านข้างทั้งสองด้าน ส่วนขนบริเวณเหนือโคนปากเป็นสีขาว ลำตัวด้านบนสีน้ำตาลมีลายสีจางกระจาย ด้านล่างสีเนื้อแกมน้ำตาลเหลือง มีลายขีดสีดำ เมื่อหุบปีกจะเห็นลายแถบสีน้ำตาลจางสลับสีเข้มบริเวณปลายปีก ขาสีเขียว มีเล็บโค้งแหลม และมีปากงุ้มแหลม
